Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a crucial meeting focused on reducing government expenditure and restructuring the government apparatus.
The meeting aimed to streamline government operations and optimize resource utilization.
During the meeting, a committee formed to suggest proposals regarding a reduction in government expenditure presented its preliminary report to the PM. The committee's recommendations included the closure of certain government institutions, merging others, and devolving certain responsibilities to provincial authorities.
The committee also suggested measures to save funds by eliminating vacant positions that have been unfilled for more than a year and introducing a contributory pension system for newly recruited government employees. Additionally, the committee suggested leveraging private sector services to enhance efficiency in government institutions.
To curtail unnecessary expenses, the committee recommended banning unnecessary travel of government officials and promoting teleconferencing as an alternative. It also advised withdrawing official vehicles from officers availing rental facilities, thereby cutting down on unnecessary costs.
PM Sharif emphasized the importance of drawing upon international best practices to formulate concrete suggestions for restructuring the government. He expressed hope that implementing the committee's recommendations would result in significant savings, potentially amounting to billions of rupees.
