The government has imposed a ban on the general import of the chemical chloroform.
According to details surfaced on Monday, under the new decision, only pharmaceutical companies or the pharmaceutical sector will be allowed to import chloroform. The pharmaceutical companies will be required to obtain a no-objection certificate from the Drug Regulatory Authority. A notification amending the Import Policy Order 2022 has been issued in this regard.
The notification was issued following approval by the Cabinet’s Economic Coordination Committee. Officials said chloroform is hazardous to human health and harmful to the environment. The amendment to the import policy is intended to prevent the misuse of chemicals.
