Setting up a new Nintendo Switch 2 doesn’t take long, but pairing controllers is often the first hurdle.
Whether you’re connecting a Pro Controller or adding extra gamepads for multiplayer, Nintendo has kept the process simple and familiar.
The Nintendo Switch 2 works with a wide range of controllers, including Nintendo’s own Switch 2 Pro Controller and many third-party Bluetooth gamepads.
Players can connect up to four controllers at once, depending on the game and controller type. All controller-related options are found under the Controllers & Sensors section in the system settings.
Before pairing any controller, make sure the Switch 2 is powered on and running the latest system software.
To check for updates, go to System Settings, then System, and select System Update. It’s also important to ensure your controller is charged, as low battery levels can prevent pairing.
How to pair Switch 2 Pro controller
Wired pairing method
The fastest and most reliable way to pair the Switch 2 Pro Controller is using a USB-C cable.
Connect the controller to the Switch 2, wake the console, and open the Controllers menu from the Home screen. The console will automatically detect and pair the controller.
Once paired, the cable can be removed and the controller will work wirelessly. This method is especially useful if the controller battery is low.
Wireless airing method
To pair the Pro Controller wirelessly, turn on the Switch 2 and navigate to System Settings, then Controllers & Sensors, and select Change Grip/Order.
Press and hold the small Sync button on top of the Pro Controller until the indicator lights begin flashing. The console will detect the controller and confirm the connection.
How to pair other bluetooth controllers
The Switch 2 also supports many Bluetooth controllers designed for PC, Android, and iOS devices.
First, put the controller into Bluetooth pairing mode. This usually involves holding a sync button or pressing a specific button combination until the lights start flashing.
On the Switch 2, open the Home Menu and select Controllers, then Change Grip/Order. The console will automatically search for nearby Bluetooth devices.
Once the controller appears on screen, select it to complete pairing. The blinking lights will stop and the controller will be assigned a player number.
Using multiple controllers for multiplayer
The Switch 2 can connect up to four wireless controllers at the same time.
For local multiplayer games, each controller is automatically assigned a player slot once connected. Some controllers may also prompt you to confirm button layouts or adjust settings after pairing.
If a controller does not appear in the pairing menu, first check that Bluetooth is enabled under Controllers & Sensors in system settings.
Restarting the controller, ensuring it has enough battery, and moving closer to the console can help reduce interference. For controllers with multiple device profiles, confirm that they are set to Nintendo Switch or standard Bluetooth mode.
For Pro Controllers, using a wired USB-C connection usually resolves pairing issues before switching back to wireless mode.
Once a controller is paired, reconnecting it is simple.
Press any button on the controller and the Switch 2 will recognize it automatically, as long as it is still linked to the console. If the controller is paired with another device later, you may need to repeat the pairing steps.
