The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), which secured a two-thirds majority in the general election, has said it will formally seek from India the extradition of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
Salahuddin Ahmed, a member of the BNP party committee who won from the Cox’s Bazar-1 constituency, told reporters outside the party’s office in Dhaka that his party would press for Sheikh Hasina’s return in accordance with the law.
“We shall exert pressure for Sheikh Hasina’s extradition in line with legal provisions,” he said.
He added: “This matter rests between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh and the Ministry of External Affairs of India. We shall ask the Indian government to send her back so that she may face the cases in court.”
Sheikh Hasina left for India in August 2024 following a popular uprising against her government.
In November last year, a court in Dhaka sentenced her to death in a case relating to crimes against humanity.
