The process of receiving provisional and unofficial results from Bangladesh’s general elections continued on Wednesday, with the Nationalist Party leading after securing 27 seats, while Jamaat-e-Islami stood second with 14 seats.
According to details, the Bangladesh Jatiya Party secured one seat to take third position. Islami Andolan Bangladesh also won one seat, while the student-backed National Citizen Party secured a single seat. The general elections are being held following the removal of Hasina Wajid’s government.
Polling began at 6:30am Pakistan time and continued until 3:30pm. More than 127.6 million voters cast their ballots on 299 out of 300 seats. Voting in one constituency was postponed due to the death of a candidate.
Bangladeshi media reported a few untoward incidents; however, the overall polling process remained peaceful. Three members of the polling staff were removed from duty over alleged rigging, while three persons sustained injuries in a petrol attack in Gopalganj. Data issued by the Bangladesh Election Commission showed voter turnout at 47.9 per cent by 2pm.
The final turnout may be considerably higher. More than 127 million voters across the country were eligible to cast their votes. Alongside the general elections, voters also participated in a referendum to endorse the July National Charter. Public opinion on the referendum will emerge with the final election results.
