In the wake of a devastating missile strike launched by India, which resulted in the deaths of at least 26 civilians across Pakistan, renowned Pakistani actress Mahira Khan took to social media to express her condemnation of the attack and the ongoing rhetoric of hatred and violence emanating from India.
In a heartfelt tweet, Khan wrote, “I am grateful that I live in a country where I am not dictated to say what I have to. I have a voice and I CAN use it. We speak up when there are injustices in our own land, we condemn violence wherever it happens even when my country Pakistan is instantly blamed without ANY evidence."
The missile attack, which targeted various civilian areas across the country, has sparked outrage among Pakistanis and international human rights groups. Authorities have reported that 26 civilians, including women and children, lost their lives as a result of the assault, with many more injured. The Indian missile strike, which occurred in the early hours of the morning, has further heightened tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbours.
Khan, who has long been an advocate for peace and justice, also addressed the ongoing conflict between Pakistan and India, noting, “India, your war and hate rhetoric has continued for many years. I have seen and experienced it with my own eyes. Your media fans the flames of division. Your most powerful voices remain silent in the face of genocide and war crimes – silenced not by law, but by Fear!”
Khan’s message also touched upon the silence of powerful figures in India in the face of the violence, accusing them of being complicit in the conflict by remaining quiet. She added, “In that fear, you claim victory. But to me, that silence is your greatest defeat.”
Despite the grave provocation, Mahira Khan called for restraint from Pakistan, urging her fellow citizens to refrain from responding with violence: “My Pakistan, I love you. May we do the right thing. May we never stoop to that level even after this heinous provocation. May peace prevail. Ameen. Pakistan Zindabad. Pakistan Paaindabad.”
