Patients suffering from various diseases in Lahore are facing increased financial strain as the cost of medical equipment has risen significantly following the implementation of sales tax.
The rates of over 150 medical devices, including essential items like sugar strips and blood pressure machines, have surged, exacerbating the burden on those in need of medical care.
The Healthcare Device Association has reported a notable increase in prices, with some items experiencing a price hike of 25% to 30%. Key examples include:
- Sugar strips: The ones previously priced at Rs1,300 are now available at Rs1,700; and those priced at Rs1,500, now Rs2,000.
- Wheelchairs: Increased from Rs13,000 to between Rs18,000 and Rs20,000.
- Blood pressure machines: Increased from Rs3,800 to Rs5,000.
- Syringes: Packs previously costing Rs3,500 now sell for Rs4,500.
- Nebulizer machines: Increased from Rs3,000 to Rs4,500.
- Thermometers: Increased from Rs350 to Rs500.
- Blood sugar monitors: Increased from Rs2,500 to Rs3,600.
There is also an increase in the rates of diagnostic tests at various private laboratories, further adding to the financial pressure on patients.
Maqsood Ahmed, chairman of the Healthcare Device Association, highlighted the impact of these price hikes on patients. "As medical equipment becomes more expensive, the overall cost of treatment will rise, disproportionately affecting poorer patients," he stated.
He also noted that approximately 95% of medical devices are imported, making their prices highly sensitive to changes in taxes and tariffs.
The rise in costs due to the sales tax implementation underscores the need for careful consideration of policies affecting healthcare expenses, especially for vulnerable populations. As patients and healthcare providers navigate these changes, there is an urgent call for solutions to mitigate the financial burden on those most in need of medical care.
