Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal said on Tuesday that Pakistan is among the top ten countries affected by climate change.
Speaking at an event in Islamabad, Iqbal said that Pakistan is among the ten countries most affected by climate change, although its contribution to greenhouse gas emissions is less than one per cent. He said the 2022 floods caused losses of nearly thirty billion dollars, while the 2025 floods affected several areas in Punjab, increasing poverty and food insecurity in poor and underdeveloped regions.
"Floods and extreme weather are increasing development losses, and the government has introduced guidelines and reforms to protect investment and enhance climate resilience," he maintained.
Iqbal added that extreme heat and weather volatility have become the new normal for Pakistan, and that irresponsible development in developed countries places an additional burden on less developed nations. He emphasised the need for financial and technical support, reform of the international financial system, and guidelines to safeguard investment in order to address the challenges of climate change.
