Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan decided on Thursday to postpone the scheduled dharna in Islamabad until July 26.
Addressing a press conference in Lahore, JI Pakistan Amir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman criticised the government's failure to provide relief to the people despite substantial claims.
Highlighting the financial burden on citizens, Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman pointed out that Pakistanis have contributed $42 billion through electricity bills and taxes, yet feel neglected in return.
"If the government wishes to avoid protests, it must alleviate the burdens on the populace," he emphasized.
Earlier plans for a dharna on July 12, protesting against rising electricity and petrol prices, have now been rescheduled to July 26.
Additionally, Jamaat-e-Islami is contemplating a nationwide strike to compel the government to reconsider its taxation policies, which, according to Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman, unfairly burden ordinary citizens while exempting the wealthy.
The ongoing crisis, exacerbated by soaring utility costs and taxes allegedly imposed at the behest of international financial institutions, has stirred widespread discontent.
Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman condemned the government's alignment with the IMF in budgetary decisions, arguing that such policies neglect crucial sectors like education and healthcare, where taxes on vital medical supplies have further strained public resources.
