Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) captain Pat Cummins and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) skipper Rajat Patidar have been penalised for maintaining a slow over rate during Match 65 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
Although Patidar did not lead the side on the field due to an injury, he remains the designated captain and was fined INR 24 lakh under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate violations.
Wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma acted as the stand-in captain during the fixture.
This marks RCB’s second such offence this season. In line with the revised IPL rules for 2025, each member of the playing XI, including the designated Impact Player, was also fined INR 6 lakh or 25 percent of their match fee—whichever is lower.
Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper Cummins was fined INR 12 lakh, as this was SRH’s first over-rate offence of the season.
According to the updated IPL code, first-time violations attract a lighter penalty, with escalating fines for repeat infractions. However, unlike in previous seasons, repeat offences will no longer lead to suspensions of team captains.
The league’s new framework was introduced to address growing concerns around match timings, with the governing council opting for a financial deterrent rather than player suspensions. That said, Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya served a one-match suspension in the 2025 season opener, a penalty that was carried over from the 2024 season under the previous rules.
On the field, SRH emerged dominant, defeating RCB by 42 runs. The victory was powered by an explosive 94-run innings from opener Ishan Kishan and a decisive three-wicket haul from Cummins.
The result handed RCB their first away defeat of the season and caused them to slip to third position on the points table—potentially jeopardising their chances of finishing in the top two.
