Apple's upcoming iPhone 17 lineup is set to receive vital camera enhancements, according to industry leaks and dummy models that have surfaced months ahead of the expected fall 2025 release. All models will benefit from upgraded front-facing cameras, while the Pro models appear poised for a complete camera redesign and substantial performance improvements.
All iPhone 17 models getting front camera upgrade
Every iPhone 17 variant will reportedly feature an enhanced 24-megapixel front-facing camera, doubling the resolution from the current 12-megapixel sensors. This substantial improvement should allow users to crop selfies with minimal quality loss, while delivering superior low-light performance and increased detail capture.
iPhone 17 Pro camera: Triple 48MP system and new design
The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models are reportedly receiving the most substantial camera overhaul. For the first time, these devices will feature three 48-megapixel lenses:
- A 48-megapixel Fusion main camera
- A 48-megapixel Ultra Wide lens (first introduced in iPhone 16 Pro)
- A new 48-megapixel Tetraprism Telephoto lens

The high-resolution telephoto lens represents 2025's standout camera feature, enabling users to crop telephoto images significantly without compromising detail.
In a significant departure from previous designs, the iPhone 17 Pro models will reportedly abandon the square camera array for a horizontal, rectangular camera bar spanning the device's rear. While the three lenses will maintain their triangular configuration, the flash, microphone, and LiDAR sensor will be repositioned to the right end of this rectangular housing.
Video capabilities getting major attention
According to sources, Apple plans to emphasize video recording capabilities in its 2025 marketing. The iPhone 17 Pro models may support 8K video recording, upgrading from the current 4K standard. Additionally, a new dual video recording function could allow simultaneous capture from both front and rear cameras—a feature particularly valuable for social media content creators.
Another potential enhancement is a mechanical variable aperture system, which would mark Apple's first departure from fixed apertures. This addition would give photographers greater control over depth-of-field effects and light management.
iPhone 17 Air: Ultra-thin design limits camera options
The rumored iPhone 17 Air, expected to be just 5.5mm thick, will reportedly feature a single 48-megapixel Fusion camera due to space constraints. Despite having only one lens, this model will also adopt the horizontal camera bar design, though in a more compact form with the lens positioned on the left and the flash and microphone on the right.

The single-lens configuration means the iPhone 17 Air likely won't support spatial video or spatial photos unless Apple develops new technology to capture dimensional content with a single camera.
Standard iPhone 17 camera appears similar to current model
The base iPhone 17 model seems to be receiving the least camera-related changes. Apart from the upgraded front camera, leaks suggest it will maintain a design similar to the iPhone 16, with two vertically-arranged lenses on the device's left side. Unlike its Pro siblings, the standard model isn't expected to adopt the new horizontal camera bar design.
Current information indicates the iPhone 17 will continue featuring a 48-megapixel Fusion main lens paired with a 12-megapixel Ultra Wide camera, though sensor improvements remain possible.
While these details come from typically reliable sources like case manufacturers and supply chain leaks, official specifications won't be confirmed until Apple's formal announcement expected in September 2025.
