Israel and Hamas reached an agreement to cease hostilities in Gaza and exchange Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners, an official privy to the deal confirmed on Wednesday.
The accord marked a significant step towards concluding a 15-month conflict that has devastated the Middle East.
The deal emerged after protracted negotiations mediated by Egypt and Qatar, with support from the United States. It coincided with the imminent inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump on 20 January, adding urgency to the diplomatic efforts.
The conflict intensified on 7 October 2023, when Hamas-led gunmen breached Israeli security barriers, infiltrated communities, and killed 1,200 soldiers and civilians.
Over 250 foreign and Israeli hostages were abducted during the attack, prompting Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.
According to Gaza's health ministry, the offensive resulted in over 46,000 fatalities, with countless others enduring harsh winter conditions in temporary shelters amid widespread destruction.
President-elect Trump underscored the importance of swift resolution during his transition period. “There would be hell to pay if the hostages were not released,” Trump stated, reiterating his administration's determination.
His Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, collaborated closely with outgoing President Joe Biden’s team to finalise the agreement.
The return of the hostages was anticipated to temper public outrage against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Critics attributed the 7 October security breach, the deadliest single day in Israel’s history, to his administration's failure.
The conflict’s ramifications extended across the region, as Iran-backed factions in Lebanon, Iraq, and Yemen launched assaults on Israel in solidarity with Palestinians.
In response, Israeli forces conducted targeted assassinations of Hamas and Hezbollah leaders, securing a strategic advantage before the ceasefire.
