Star Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah’s participation in the upcoming Champions Trophy is uncertain after he sustained an injury during the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
According to sources, Bumrah will report to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru for rehabilitation under the supervision of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
The 30-year-old pacer, widely regarded as one of India’s finest, suffered the injury during the second day of the final Test match. Bumrah managed to bowl only one over after the lunch break before leaving the field. Subsequent scans revealed the extent of the injury, which prevented him from participating in the remainder of the match.
Sources familiar with the matter told India Today that Bumrah might be named in the provisional squad for the Champions Trophy, but his final availability will hinge on his recovery progress. “Selectors will take a call, but as of now, his inclusion will be subject to fitness,” a source revealed.
Uncertainty over injury severity
The exact nature and severity of Bumrah’s injury remain unclear, as the BCCI has yet to release an official statement. Medical experts at the NCA are expected to determine the injury's classification, which will significantly impact his recovery timeline.
If the injury falls under Grade 1, Bumrah could return to play within two to three weeks following rehabilitation. However, a Grade 2 injury could extend the recovery period to six weeks, while a Grade 3 injury, the most severe, would require a minimum of three months of rest and rehabilitation.
Excessive workload concern
Bumrah’s excessive workload during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy has been cited as a possible cause of his back spasm and subsequent injury. The pacer bowled more than 150 overs during the series, raising concerns about player management.
The BCCI is reportedly cautious about rushing Bumrah’s return, particularly with the Champions Trophy approaching. “He was expected to rest during the T20I series against England, but the Champions Trophy’s proximity made him a crucial contender for selection,” the source added.
