Pakistan has welcomed US President Donald Trump’s statement on the longstanding Kashmir dispute, emphasizing the importance of resolving the issue in accordance with United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions.
In a statement issued by the Foreign Office on Sunday, Spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan praised the efforts of the United States and other friendly nations in brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan.
The ceasefire followed a series of escalating military exchanges that had raised fears of a broader conflict in the region. The spokesperson emphasized that the ceasefire was a crucial step toward reducing tensions and ensuring regional stability.
“Pakistan appreciates the constructive role of the United States, along with other friendly states, in the Pakistan-India ceasefire,” the spokesperson said. “This was a significant step towards reducing tensions and ensuring stability in the region.”
The Foreign Office reiterated that the Kashmir issue has profound implications for global peace, particularly in South Asia.
Kashmir solution in line with security council resolution
The spokesperson stressed that any solution to the Kashmir dispute should be in accordance with the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions, which call for a peaceful resolution of the issue while respecting the right of the Kashmiri people to self-determination. Pakistan’s position on Kashmir remains firm, with the country seeking an equitable and lasting resolution that aligns with international law and UN resolutions.
"We believe that the resolution of the Kashmir issue is not only critical for the peace and security of South Asia but also for the broader international community," the spokesperson added.
Pakistan also expressed its willingness to engage with the United States and other international partners in efforts aimed at promoting peace, security, and prosperity in the region.
Strengthening Pakistan-US partnership
In addition to the Kashmir issue, the spokesperson emphasized Pakistan’s desire to deepen its partnership with the United States. Pakistan seeks to enhance bilateral cooperation across various sectors, including trade, security, and regional stability. The Foreign Office expressed optimism about the future of the Pakistan-US relationship and its potential for further strengthening in the coming years.
“We are committed to joining the United States and the international community in efforts to promote peace and stability in South Asia,” the spokesperson concluded. "We also look forward to further strengthening our multilateral partnership with the United States."
Trump’s remarks on ceasefire and Kashmir
US President Donald Trump had earlier praised the leaders of India and Pakistan for agreeing to a ceasefire, which was mediated by the United States. In a statement on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump congratulated both nations for choosing “common sense and great intelligence” in ending hostilities.
He also expressed his intention to increase trade with both countries and vowed to work towards a solution to the Kashmir issue.
“While not even discussed, I am going to increase trade substantially with both of these great nations. Additionally, I will work with you both to see if, after a thousand years, a solution can be arrived at concerning Kashmir,” Trump said in his post.
