Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has underscored the critical importance of water resources in addressing environmental, economic and climate challenges, urging collective action on World Water Resources Day.
In his message on World Water Resources Day, Prime Minister Sharif said the day offers an important opportunity to reaffirm Pakistan’s commitment to the long-term conservation and sustainable management of water resources. He stressed that water plays a vital role in tackling serious environmental and economic problems faced by countries around the world.
He noted that dwindling water resources directly affect people’s livelihoods, raise food prices and increase the risks of floods and droughts, making conservation an urgent national priority.
Theme emphasises culture and heritage
The prime minister highlighted this year’s theme, 'Water Resources and Traditional Knowledge: Preserving Cultural Heritage'. He said the theme serves as a reminder of the deep cultural background and historical importance of water resources in human civilization.
According to him, water is not only a natural asset but also an integral part of cultural identity and heritage that must be preserved for future generations.
PM Sharif said water resources are essential in protecting societies against droughts, floods and the severe impacts of climate change. He added that they also play a key role in conserving biodiversity and safeguarding ecosystems from environmental degradation.
For millions of Pakistanis, he said, water resources are a direct source of livelihood and an indispensable part of daily life, linking water security to food security and economic stability.
Conservation tied to collective well-being
Emphasizing shared responsibility, the prime minister said conservation of water resources is not just an environmental duty but a guarantee of both individual and collective well-being. He called on citizens to take responsibility at personal and community levels to protect and manage water sustainably.
On the occasion, he urged people across the country to pledge that every possible effort would be made to safeguard water resources.
International water laws
The premier reaffirmed Pakistan’s belief in the full implementation of the Indus Waters Treaty in accordance with international laws. He strongly condemned the use of water as a weapon of war, calling it a serious violation of international legal norms.
“Pakistan categorically rejects the use of water as a weapon of war,” he said, adding that the country will continue to raise its voice globally for the fair and just use of water resources.
Concluding his message, he said Pakistan will remain committed to promoting equitable water-sharing principles at the international level. He stressed that sustainable water management is essential not only for environmental protection but also for peace, stability and human well-being worldwide.
