T-Mobile has officially announced that iPhone users can now participate in the beta testing of SpaceX’s Starlink direct-to-cell satellite service, following the latest iOS 18.3 update.
Initially available only for select Android smartphones, this expansion now allows iPhones to join the trial phase of the service.
What’s new?
The Starlink direct-to-cell service enables satellite-based text messaging, allowing users to send texts even in areas lacking traditional cellular infrastructure. While this initial beta test is limited to text messaging, T-Mobile and SpaceX plan to introduce voice and data capabilities in future updates.
The service, which has been undergoing trial runs since receiving approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in November 2024, is seen as a breakthrough for providing connectivity in remote regions where typical cellular towers are unavailable.
The T-Mobile and SpaceX partnership, approved by the FCC last year, aims to provide seamless coverage through Starlink satellites, even in places hit by natural disasters.
In October 2024, Starlink satellites were used to offer coverage in North Carolina, assisting in communication during Hurricane Helene.
