Media Matters for Democracy (MMfD) has announced the official launch of Sahafat.AI, a bold new initiative designed to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into Pakistani newsrooms. The program marks a major milestone in the country’s media landscape, aiming to support journalism through context-specific, ethical, and newsroom-led AI adoption.
The project is set to roll out over the course of 2025 in collaboration with three leading Pakistani news organizations. The goal: to co-create customized AI solutions tailored to the unique editorial workflows, content strategies, and operational structures of each newsroom.
MMfD emphasized that Sahafat.AI is not about replacing journalists with machines. Instead, it seeks to empower media professionals with smart tools that enhance productivity, strengthen editorial independence, and improve overall newsroom sustainability. The AI solutions will target core journalistic functions, including:
-
Information management
-
Research and data analysis
-
Trend monitoring and predictive modeling
-
Fact-checking and verification
-
Editorial planning
-
Audience engagement and analytics
Training will be a key component of the initiative. Editorial teams will receive targeted modules to help them not just use, but actively shape and evolve AI tools to meet their needs.
Samaa Digital has been announced as the first newsroom to formally join the program. MMfD will work closely with the organization’s editorial staff in a phased rollout that includes workflow mapping, tool development, deployment, and hands-on training.
“As part of our continued engagement with editors and journalists over the past year, we’ve encountered both the excitement and concern surrounding AI’s role in journalism,” said MMfD Executive Director Asad Baig. “With Sahafat.AI, we are moving from conversation to implementation, anchoring this work in editorial realities, not tech abstraction.”
Baig added that the initiative is driven by MMfD’s belief in human centric, rights based innovation, where journalists remain at the center of any digital transformation. “This is about giving newsrooms the tools to lead their own change,” he said.
MMfD will release further updates on newsroom partnerships, technical architecture, and impact assessments in the coming months.
The launch of Sahafat.AI comes at a time when global conversations about AI’s impact on media are gaining momentum. Pakistan’s media sector now joins that dialogue as observers and as active participants, shaping the future of journalism.
