In Greece, an olive tree has been recognized as the oldest olive tree in the world, and remarkably, it still produces olives.
The tree, known as the Olive Tree of Vouves, is located in the village of Ano Vouves on the island of Crete. Its age is estimated at around 3,000 years, with some experts suggesting it could be as old as 4,000 years, meaning it predates the by over a millennium.
The tree has a massive and dense trunk, with a circumference of approximately 12.5 meters (41 feet) and a diameter of about 4.6 meters.
In 1997, it was declared a natural monument, and a nearby olive museum was established. The tree is famous not only for its extraordinary age but also because its branches have been used in numerous historical events, including ceremonies for the Olympic Games.
