Pope Francis has been admitted to Rome's Gemelli Polyclinic for treatment after being diagnosed with bronchitis, the Vatican confirmed in a brief statement.
Following his Friday audience, the 88-year-old leader of the Catholic Church was taken to the hospital for further tests and medical care. Despite his diagnosis last week, he has continued with his engagements, though his condition has affected his ability to speak publicly.
Earlier this week, during an address at the Vatican, Pope Francis asked an aide to read his prepared speech, saying, "Me, with my bronchitis, I cannot (read) still. I hope that next time I can."
The Pope has faced several health challenges over the past two years, including bouts of influenza and mobility issues. He often uses a walker, cane, or wheelchair in public and has recently suffered falls, injuring his arm and chin.
