The National Assembly on Monday passed a resolution condemning the alleged insulting behaviour of PTI founder Imran Khan towards senior journalist Ijaz Ahmed in Adiala Jail, sparking heated debate and a temporary walkout by the Parliamentary Reporters Association.
Resolution passed amid tensions
During the session, the House adopted a resolution by majority vote, declaring that verbal abuse and mistreatment of journalists would not be tolerated under any circumstances. The resolution came after reporters walked out of the press gallery in protest, demanding accountability.
On the instructions of Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, Federal Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar and other members persuaded the journalists to return to the session.
Law minister’s strong words
Federal Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar condemned the incident, stressing the need for political leaders to uphold dignity and responsibility.
“If a politician takes up the baton, uses harsh words, and resorts to abusive language, then it means the entire system is broken. You have been the prime minister of this country; you need to be more careful,” he said.
Shazia Marri warns against hate politics
PPP leader Shazia Marri also criticized the PTI founder’s alleged actions, calling for an end to divisive politics.
“Putting a picture of Ijaz Ahmed Sahib in front of your workers should not provoke them into chaos. Keep the politics of hatred away so that important issues of this country can be worked on,” she stated.
Barrister Gauhar urges caution
PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, however, questioned the resolution, urging that facts be established before passing judgment.
“We do not know what actually happened in the jail. Let the facts come out first. Such a resolution will spoil the atmosphere of the House,” he remarked.
Journalists’ protest
The Parliamentary Reporters Association staged a walkout in solidarity with Ijaz Ahmed, underlining their stance that the dignity and safety of journalists must be respected. Their protest ended after assurances from the Speaker and senior lawmakers.
