Marco Jansen returned figures of 4 for 40 and captain Aiden Markram struck 86 not out off 44 balls as South Africa secured a comprehensive victory over New Zealand in the 24th match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, on Saturday.
With the result, South Africa completed three wins from three matches in Group D and remained at the top of the table. After electing to field first, South Africa restricted New Zealand to 175 for seven in their allotted 20 overs.
Tim Seifert made 13 and Finn Allen scored 31 before both fell to Jansen. Rachin Ravindra added 13, while Glenn Phillips departed for one. Mark Chapman provided the main resistance with 48 off 26 balls, striking six fours and two sixes. Daryl Mitchell contributed 32 from 24 deliveries. James Neesham remained unbeaten on 23, with Matt Henry nine not out at the close.
Jansen led the bowling with four wickets for 40 runs in his four overs. Keshav Maharaj and Corbin Bosch claimed one wicket each, while Lungi Ngidi also took a scalp.
In reply, South Africa reached the target of 176 in 17.1 overs for the loss of three wickets.
Markram anchored the chase with an unbeaten 86, hitting eight fours and four sixes at a strike rate of 195.45. Quinton de Kock scored 20, while Ryan Rickelton and Dewald Brevis made 21 apiece. David Miller remained not out on 24 as South Africa sealed victory with 17 balls to spare.
Lockie Ferguson and James Neesham picked up one wicket each for New Zealand.
Jansen was named player of the match for his decisive spell.
