Following the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny in jail and the ongoing crises in Ukraine, the US is going to strike Russia by severe sanctions on Friday. US President Joe Biden made this announcement on Tuesday, although he did not explain it further.
As per the reports by White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, the most recent sanctions on Russia would target a number of things, like sources of revenue for the economy and also defence and industrial bases.
Another statement by White House spokesperson John Kirby stated that the package will "hold Russia accountable for what happened to Mr. Navalny" and for its activities throughout the conflict in Ukraine.
Over the death of Navalny, some sources familiar with the matter said US Treasury’s Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian Nelson will discuss these sections during their trip to Europe this week.
Following the Russian invasion on Ukraine on Feb 24, 2022, the US imposed a variety of sanctions on Russia, including on President Vladimir Putin, his officials and also on Russian banks.
The prison administration reported that Navalny, who was serving a three-decade sentence at the "Polar Wolf" jail colony above the Arctic Circle, suddenly passed away on Friday after going for a walk. Navalny was Putin's most vocal domestic critic.
