Punjab Assembly members have hailed the construction of the Mehfooz Shaheed Canal as a groundbreaking initiative that will transform barren lands in Cholistan into fertile agricultural fields.
The project, undertaken under the Green Pakistan Initiative, aims to optimize water resources and boost agricultural productivity in the region.
Lawmakers from South Punjab emphasized the importance of the canal, calling it the need of the hour. Punjab MPA Wasif Mazhar Raan dismissed misinformation about the canal, clarifying that it originates from the Sutlej River.
"This project will not only bring an agricultural revolution to South Punjab and Cholistan but also help counter India's water aggression," said Wasif Mazhar Raan. He added that efficient water utilization would improve the lives of farmers, benefiting both Punjab and Pakistan.
MPA Mian Kamran Abdullah Madal highlighted that the new canal system would prevent water from being wasted into the sea, instead using it to irrigate previously barren lands.
"These canals will help cultivate the Thal and Cholistan regions, boosting our economy. Similar initiatives should also be launched in Balochistan to ensure sustainable agriculture," he stated.
PTI MNA Mian Ghaus Muhammad underscored the urgent need for new irrigation projects in Pakistan, stressing that despite being an agricultural country, Pakistan still imports wheat, sugar, and rice.
"We spend millions of dollars importing agricultural commodities. By developing a modern canal system, we can save foreign exchange, cultivate barren lands, and create job opportunities," he said. He added that nearly 150,000 people in Cholistan would directly benefit from the project.
Lawmakers urged the government to expand similar projects across Sindh and Balochistan, ensuring a sustainable agricultural future for Pakistan.
