US Secretary of State Antony Blinken commenced a week-long diplomatic mission to address heightened tensions in the Middle East following the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Initiating talks in Istanbul with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, Blinken discussed Gaza's humanitarian crisis, Turkey's NATO process involving Sweden, and potential F-16 fighter jet sales.
The US is optimistic about Turkey's approval of Sweden's NATO membership, crucial for F-16 deals.
Subsequently, Blinken will visit Crete to meet Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, addressing F-35 fighter jet sales and anticipating positive developments.
The tour will extend to Arab states, Israel, and the West Bank, emphasizing US opposition to a regional escalation.
Washington envisions a role for Turkey and other regional players in Gaza's governance and reconstruction post-Hamas eradication.
