A new medical review has found that eating an orange daily may significantly reduce the risk of mouth, throat and stomach cancers.
The study, conducted in Australia, highlights the powerful nutrients packed inside citrus fruits.
Experts say these findings further reinforce the long-known benefits of including fruits and vegetables in the daily diet.
According to the Australian study, eating one orange a day can lower the risk of mouth, throat and stomach cancer.
Researchers reviewed 48 cases from around the world, which also showed that citrus fruits may assist in managing arterial disease, obesity and diabetes.
The review added that consuming citrus fruits daily along with five servings of vegetables and fruits can reduce the risk of a heart attack by 19%.
The report states that oranges carry the highest amount of antioxidants compared to all other citrus fruits.
These antioxidants are crucial in protecting the body from cell damage and disease.
What nutrients do oranges contain?
Experts say oranges contain vitamins C, B, A and E, along with calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus and natural sugars.
Vitamin C, in particular, plays a key role in strengthening the body’s defenses, and since the human body cannot produce it, regular intake through food is essential.
The fiber in oranges supports digestion and speeds up bowel movements.
Research also shows that orange juice may reduce the risk of gallstones by breaking down cholesterol and converting it into bile acids.
Orange juice contains nearly 85% water, which helps keep the body hydrated.
A glass of orange juice in the morning may help lower stress levels and mental strain caused by daily routines.
Experts believe this can indirectly prevent digestive issues and stress-related discomfort.
Surprising healing compounds in orange peels
A study highlighted that a compound found in orange peels – Polymethoxylated Flavones (PMF) – may be more effective than some medicines in reducing harmful cholesterol, and without side effects.
Components such as tangeretin and nobiletin are most abundant in orange and cantaloupe peels.
These compounds are present in smaller quantities in the juice.
Orange peels also contain carbohydrates like pectin, which encourages the growth of healthy intestinal bacteria and protects against infections and gut-related diseases.
