U.S. Secret Service agents have dismantled a covert network of electronic devices in and around New York City that officials say could have disabled the city’s cellphone service and disrupted emergency communications.
According to officials, agents uncovered the network at five locations within 35 miles of New York. The operation led to the seizure of more than 300 co-located SIM servers and 100,000 SIM cards, alongside cocaine, illegal firearms, computers, and mobile phones.
Authorities warned that the system could be weaponized to disrupt cellular towers and hinder communications of emergency services, including EMS and police.
Potential threat to UNGA
Matt McCool, head of the Secret Service’s New York Field Office, said the network was under investigation for possible links to threats against senior U.S. officials and attempts to interfere with the United Nations General Assembly currently taking place in New York.
“These devices allowed anonymous, encrypted communications between potential threat actors and criminal enterprises,” McCool said in a video statement. “This network had the potential to disable cellphone towers and essentially shut down the cellular network in New York City.”
Used for criminal activity and threats
Officials said the devices had already been used to send assassination threats against senior U.S. officials earlier this year. The Secret Service began its investigation after detecting a rise in telecommunications-based threats.
Another official, speaking anonymously, noted the risk of denial-of-service attacks: “They could block EMS or police from responding to a scene if needed. They can also be used for anonymous, encrypted communication.”
Ongoing investigation
Authorities are now analyzing the SIM cards to trace the origins of the network. “We’re working through every call, every text, every search made on those SIM cards,” an official confirmed.
McCool reassured residents that the seized devices “no longer pose a threat to the New York tristate area” but emphasized that investigators are pursuing those responsible and their possible intent.
