Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav surrendered at Tihar Jail after the Delhi High Court rejected his plea to extend the deadline in his cheque bounce cases.
Yadav, known for his comic roles, has appeared in numerous blockbuster films, earning praise for his lively performances. He has acted in films such as Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Hungama, Dhamaal, Chup Chup Ke, Phir Hera Pheri, and Kal Ho Naa Ho.
The Delhi High Court on Wednesday dismissed Yadav’s request for more time to appear before jail authorities. Following the court’s decision, he presented himself at Tihar Jail on Thursday.
A jail source said Yadav reported to authorities at 4 pm, after which standard procedures were initiated.
Earlier, the court had directed him on February 2 to appear by February 4. His lawyer had requested an additional week, stating that Yadav had arranged Rs5 million and needed more time to complete the payment. Justice Swarna Kanta Sharma dismissed the plea, stating there was no basis for granting relief.
In April 2018, Yadav was sentenced to six months in prison and fined for failing to repay a loan, though he was granted immediate bail. In June 2024, the High Court temporarily suspended his sentence on the condition that he take serious steps to explore an amicable settlement with the opposing party.
Reports indicate Yadav had borrowed Rs 5 crore from a businessman to finance a film project. When he failed to repay the loan, the businessman initiated legal proceedings against him.
