Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a telephone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to discuss recent regional tensions and bilateral cooperation.
During the conversation, Prime Minister Sharif appreciated Iran's role in de-escalating tensions in South Asia. He thanked President Pezeshkian for Iran’s constructive efforts and stressed Pakistan’s desire for peace and regional stability.
Sharif, however, voiced strong concern over India’s recent attempts to unilaterally revoke the Indus Waters Treaty. Calling the treaty Pakistan’s "lifeline for 240 million people," the prime minister declared India’s move a “red line” that threatens regional peace and violates international norms.
India’s aggression and Kashmir dispute in focus
Condemning India’s provocative military actions during the standoff, Prime Minister Sharif praised the bravery and restraint of Pakistan’s armed forces. "Our brave forces gave a responsible and befitting reply to the enemy's aggression," he said.
He added that Pakistan agreed to the ceasefire out of its commitment to peace, reiterating its right to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity at all costs. He said Pakistan is determined to maintain the ceasefire agreement.
Sharif also highlighted the long-standing Kashmir dispute as the core reason for instability in the region. He reiterated Pakistan’s principled stance that a lasting peace in South Asia is not possible without the resolution of the Kashmir issue in accordance with United Nations resolutions.
Iranian support for Pakistan's peace efforts
President Pezeshkian welcomed the Pakistan-India ceasefire and extended condolences over the loss of civilian lives during recent hostilities. He praised Pakistan’s mature approach to conflict resolution and affirmed Iran’s continued commitment to promoting peace and stability in the region.
The Iranian leader also expressed hope that all outstanding regional issues could be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy. He stressed the importance of cooperation between neighbouring countries to confront shared challenges.
Bilateral cooperation and official visit to Iran
Both leaders agreed to enhance cooperation in key sectors, including security, regional affairs, and trade. Prime Minister Sharif also extended his best wishes to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and accepted President Pezeshkian’s invitation for an official visit to Iran in the near future.
