Pakistan's Ambassador to the United States Rizwan Saeed Sheikh stressed that it is essential to resolve the core issue between Pakistan and India — Jammu and Kashmir — in addition to the implementation of any ceasefire.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Turkish broadcaster TRT, Sheikh condemned the notion of a 'new normal' for the region, labeling it as unrealistic. "Any reference to a new normal is itself an absurdity. Such statements should be avoided," the Ambassador remarked, reflecting Pakistan’s firm stance on the long-standing Kashmir dispute.
Rizwan Sheikh emphasised that the heart of the issue between Pakistan and India lies in the Kashmir region. He stated that the resolution of the Kashmir conflict remains central to any efforts for achieving lasting peace between the two nations. "The resolution of the Kashmir issue will continue to affect every effort for lasting peace," Sheikh added.
The ambassador reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to peace, underscoring that the country is determined to respond decisively to any provocation or aggression.
"We are a peace-loving nation, and we prioritize the interests of the one and a half billion people of this region," he said, reinforcing Pakistan’s dedication to peace and stability in South Asia.
While acknowledging the crucial role of the United States in reducing regional tensions, Sheikh expressed gratitude for the continuous efforts made by the U.S. leadership in addressing the recent flare-up between Pakistan and India. "The United States has always been proactive in reducing tensions in the region," he said.
He also expressed appreciation for the diplomatic efforts of other friendly nations, including Saudi Arabia and Turkey, in seeking a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
The envoy pointed out that the growing international focus on the Kashmir issue offers a rare opportunity for a permanent solution.
However, he emphasized the importance of continuity and sustained attention from the international community, including the U.S., towards resolving the Kashmir dispute. "The world's attention to the Kashmir issue is encouraging, but this connection and continuity are extremely important," he noted.
