Pomegranate is among the beneficial fruits that characterise winter, due to its high content of essential nutrients required by the body throughout the day.
Despite this, many people with diabetes avoid pomegranate in winter, believing that it raises blood sugar. The medical experts said that the consultant in internal medicine, has refuted this notion.
The experts said that pomegranate is a safe winter fruit for diabetics because it contains a low level of carbohydrates, approximately 15 grams per 100 grams. It has been said that pomegranate increases blood glucose only when sugar is added to its seeds, a practice that reduces its benefits and adds high caloric content.
Pomegranate played a significant role in regulating blood sugar levels, containing three times the antioxidants found in green tea. It also has a low glycaemic index, meaning it does not lead to a rise in blood sugar when consumed.
