Help control blood sugar levels
Pears fall within the low glycaemic index category and can serve as a refreshing snack for those with type 2 diabetes. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reports that regular pear consumption can reduce the risk of diabetes. The fruit’s antioxidant anthocyanin helps prevent sudden rises in blood sugar.
Reduce risk of heart disease
Pears contain a rich amount of potassium, which helps maintain normal blood pressure and protect against heart disease. The anthocyanin compound in pears also protects against coronary artery disease. Research published in Frontiers in Nutrition shows that regular intake of pears lowers the risk of stroke.
Lower blood cholesterol
Pears provide essential minerals such as copper and potassium, which assist in controlling blood cholesterol. According to Open Heart Journal, patients with high cholesterol who received a daily copper supplement of 5 mg for 45 days showed lower total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein and triglycerides, while levels of high-density lipoprotein increased. Thus, regular consumption of pears can help reduce harmful cholesterol.
Protect against Alzheimer’s and dementia
Pears may also reduce the risk of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and dementia. They are rich in antioxidants, anti-inflammatory compounds and flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol, which protect brain cells from oxidative stress and inflammation. A study found that pear consumption is linked to a lower risk of dementia.
Reduce cancer risk
Including pears in a daily diet may help lower cancer risk. The fruit contains strong anti-cancer compounds. A 2021 review published in BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies found that flavonoids and terpenoids present in pears possess anti-cancer and anti-tumour properties.
Support digestive health
Daily consumption of pears promotes digestive health due to their high fibre content, which improves bowel movement and prevents constipation.
