The Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) has conditionally approved the establishment of human milk banks in Pakistan, stressing that such institutions should only function under strict legislation to prevent misuse and ensure compliance with Islamic injunctions.
The CII meeting, chaired by Chairman Raghib Naeemi, announced that human milk storage institutions could be established under specific conditions.
However, it emphasised that mandatory legislation should be enacted first, and the Council must be made part of the process to avoid potential corruption and misuse.
Objections to SC’s Sept 11 decision
During the session, the Council also expressed serious reservations over a Supreme Court ruling issued on September 11 by a two-member bench.
The CII stated that making iddat (waiting period) and maintenance mandatory for an unmarried woman in the event of divorce runs contrary to the Quran and Sunnah. It stressed that such interpretations require careful consideration to remain consistent with Islamic principles.
The Council reiterated the need for lawmakers to consult the CII in matters where sensitive religious and social issues intersect with legislation. According to the announcement, this approach would ensure that legal provisions align with both constitutional requirements and Islamic teachings.
