Commonly known as ‘lady finger’ in English, okra is not just a staple in many Pakistani kitchens but is also increasingly being recognised for its numerous health benefits, according to nutrition experts.
Okra, or bhindi, is a seasonal vegetable widely consumed in various forms such as curries, fried dishes, or stews. Apart from its rich flavour, it is popular for its quick cooking time and natural stickiness, which is used in some culinary traditions to enhance texture.
Recent health research highlights that okra is low in calories but high in essential nutrients, particularly vitamin C, which plays a key role in boosting the immune system.
Cancer-preventive qualities
According to medical researchers, okra contains polyphenol antioxidants, such as vitamins A and C, that help combat free radicals — unstable molecules that cause cell damage and may lead to cancer. A protein found in okra, known as lectin, has shown promising results in inhibiting the growth of cancer cells, particularly breast cancer cells. Some experimental studies revealed that concentrated okra extracts reduced the growth of such cells by up to 63 per cent.
Benefits for heart and brain health
Nutritionists also point to polyphenols in okra as vital compounds that can reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke by limiting blood clot formation and protecting cells from oxidative stress. These antioxidants are also believed to support brain health by reducing inflammation and oxidative damage, which are associated with neurological conditions.
Blood sugar regulation
A number of independent studies have also noted okra’s potential in regulating blood sugar levels. According to health experts, certain compounds in okra slow down the absorption of sugar in the digestive tract, which could be beneficial for people with diabetes or pre-diabetic conditions.
Rich nutritional profile
Okra is packed with a variety of important vitamins and minerals, including magnesium, folate, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin K, and vitamin B6. These nutrients are essential for the immune system, nervous system, bone health, and blood circulation.
Health professionals recommend incorporating okra into a balanced diet due to its natural nutritional value and protective properties against chronic diseases such as diabetes, stroke, heart disease, and certain types of cancer.
While further clinical trials are required to confirm some of these findings, experts agree that regular consumption of okra can contribute significantly to overall health and well-being.
