Amnesty International has released a comprehensive report on the ongoing violence in Manipur, India, which began in May 2023. The conflict between the Kuki and Meitei tribes has resulted in over 200 deaths and displaced more than 60,000 people in the past 400 days.
The report highlights the failure of the ruling party to effectively address the situation and protect human rights in the state. Amnesty International's chairman for India expressed concern over the state's inability to ensure public safety and hold perpetrators accountable, leading to fear and anxiety among Manipur's residents.
The organization conducted visits to relief camps in Manipur, where affected individuals reported unfulfilled promises of financial assistance from the government. Amnesty International called for immediate action to establish relief camps and address human rights violations in the region.
The report also noted instances of media suppression, including a police case filed against three journalists from the Editors Guild of India fact-finding team in September 2023 for reporting on the violence via social media.
Amnesty International urged the government to take practical steps towards rehabilitating victims and addressing human rights violations in Manipur.
