US President Donald Trump made striking claims on Monday, saying the United States played a critical role in de-escalating tensions between Pakistan and India during a dangerous standoff, helping avert what he called a "nuclear war".
Speaking at a news conference at the White House, Trump revealed that the US had “helped both countries a lot” in achieving a ceasefire during the conflict. "We told them -- stop fighting. If you don’t stop the fighting, the US will not trade with you," he said.
He credited US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio for their behind-the-scenes diplomatic efforts. “Vance and Rubio worked very hard. They contacted the leadership of both Pakistan and India,” Trump said.
Trump stated that the conflict between the two South Asian nations had reached a dangerous point. "There was a very serious situation between the two countries. We had to act fast,” he said. “We averted a nuclear war,” he added.
According to Trump, US mediation helped bring about a ceasefire, which he described as “very important” for regional stability. “The fighting stopped. That was critical,” he emphasized.
Looking ahead, Trump said the US is ready to support both Pakistan and India on economic and diplomatic fronts. “We will hold talks with Pakistan soon,” he announced, while also offering help to both nations on trade matters.
He praised the leadership of both countries, calling them “unwavering” in their commitment to peace.
