Jamaat-e-Islami's (JI) Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman issued on Sunday a stern warning to the government, suggesting that a nationwide appeal against paying electricity bills might be initiated if their demands are not met.
This declaration was made during the party’s ongoing sit-in at Liaquat Bagh, which has now entered its tenth day.
In a speech addressing the protestors, Hafiz Naeem emphasised that Jamaat-e-Islami is committed to its seven-point agenda and is unwilling to compromise on its demands.
He called on the Prime Minister to take immediate action to reduce electricity bills, framing it as essential for the rulers’ own political survival.
The Ji leader accused the government of duplicity, asserting that while negotiations are held, the government’s subsequent actions contradict the promises made during discussions.
He highlighted the issue of inflated electricity bills, attributing part of the problem to the alleged mismanagement and corruption involving Independent Power Producers (IPPs).
Hafiz Naeem also took a jibe at the MQM for its political opportunism, claiming the party joins different governments only to secure its share of power and resources.
He expressed frustration over the government's inability to address the core issues raised by the sit-in, including the high cost of living and excessive utility bills.
The ongoing sit-in, which has been a focal point of Jamaat-e-Islami’s campaign, aims to address rising inflation and the soaring cost of electricity. Despite prolonged negotiations, the party has yet to reach a consensus with the government.
Hafiz Naeemur Rehman also hinted at an impending announcement of a dharna (sit-in) in Lahore within the next few days, signaling an escalation in their protest strategy.
