Captain Karnal Sher Khan, recipient of Nishan-e-Haider, led numerous raids during the Kargil War, repelling enemy attacks and inflicting heavy losses.
On July 5, 1999, Khan and 14 comrades were tasked with eliminating resistance between Kashif and Wakeel posts. They encountered a large enemy force advancing towards Kashif post.
Despite challenging conditions, Khan and his remaining team launched a full-scale attack, catching the enemy off guard and causing significant damage.
During this operation, Khan and seven comrades were hit by enemy sniper fire and embraced martyrdom.
An Indian Brigade Commander acknowledged Khan's bravery, stating, "The counterattacks led by Captain Karnal Sher Khan had almost uprooted our troops."
