Senior Sindh Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has revealed that the Sindh government is in the process of constructing 2.1 million houses, free of cost, as part of a massive housing scheme.
“Ownership of these houses is being granted to women to strengthen their role in society and ensure family stability,” he stated at the signing ceremony of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Sindh Transport Department and KFC Pakistan in Karachi.
The MoU is aimed at enhancing public-private collaboration for transport and social empowerment initiatives, particularly focused on women. Memon highlighted the provincial government's wide-ranging efforts to uplift and empower women, calling it a core priority of the Pakistan Peoples Party-led administration.
Pink transport revolution for women
The minister also spoke about the successful launch of the Pink Bus Service in Sindh, exclusively for women, and announced that the government has now decided to take another major step -- providing free pink electric scooters to women across the province.
“Every year, women will be provided with free scooters so they can commute independently and safely,” Memon said, adding that over 8,000 women have already applied for the initiative.
Free driving training and licenses
Memon shared that 144 women have received driving licenses under the initiative so far, while Transport Secretary Riza Pir confirmed that the government will not only provide free driving lessons but will also bear the cost of license issuance for all participating women.
“We want to eliminate every barrier that stops women from being mobile and financially independent,” the minister said.
The minister noted that the Pakistan Peoples Party has a strong history of advocating for women’s rights. “It was during our government that women were issued CNICs and given the right to vote. We are proud of this legacy and are expanding it further,” he concluded.
