The Punjab health department said that over the past 12 days more than 50,000 influenza cases have been reported in government hospitals across Punjab.
As in other countries, Pakistan has also witnessed a rapid rise in influenza cases, with viral infections in Punjab, particularly Lahore, assuming a concerning form. A large number of city residents suffering from influenza and other viral illnesses are visiting government and private hospitals and clinics.
Even private clinics are experiencing an unusual rush of patients. Common symptoms among the affected include dry cough, severe cold, headache, and body aches.
Medical experts were of the view that most patients visiting hospitals are exhibiting symptoms of influenza A (H3N2). Experts have warned that influenza cases are expected to increase further from December to February, while smog may prolong the duration of symptoms.
The health department stated that, at present, influenza cases are not being confirmed through laboratory tests. However, on the basis of clinical diagnosis, the number of cases is being reported as high.
