One of Bollywood’s greatest classics is making a historic comeback. Sholay will re-release in cinemas on December 12, 2025, in a brand-new 4K restoration that finally includes its original ending.
Fans are calling it a once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience the film as it was meant to be seen.
Bollywood’s iconic film Sholay is set to hit theatres across India in a restored version titled Sholay: The Final Cut. The special release marks the film’s 50th anniversary and brings audiences a version that has never been publicly screened before.
The Film Heritage Foundation, in partnership with Sippy Films, led the restoration, presenting director Ramesh Sippy’s complete creative vision in 4K and Dolby 5.1.
The biggest draw of this edition is its original climax, which was removed during India’s Emergency era for being too violent. In the reinstated ending, Thakur (Sanjeev Kumar) kills the feared outlaw Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan) using spiked shoes, a moment that dramatically alters the film’s emotional resolution.
The scene, unseen by the public for five decades, has generated immense excitement among fans and film historians.
One of largest releases for restored classic
The re-release is expected to reach nearly 1,500 screens across India. This makes Sholay: The Final Cut one of the widest theatrical releases ever for a restored Indian film, underscoring its timeless popularity.
Sippy Films announced, “Experience the original uncut version for the first time ever, restored in 4K and Dolby 5.1.”
Before its nationwide release, the restored edition was showcased internationally. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and later screened at the Indian Film Festival in Sydney. These global appearances highlighted the enduring cultural impact of Sholay, even half a century after its debut.
The 50-year celebration gives audiences — both longtime admirers and first-time viewers — a rare opportunity to witness Sholay in its purest form.
With its original ending restored and visuals enhanced, Sholay: The Final Cut promises to be a powerful big-screen experience.
