A widely shared video claiming to show Russian President Vladimir Putin threatening Pakistan over tensions with Afghanistan is fake, according to the Russian Embassy in Islamabad.
The clip, circulating on X and other platforms, features Putin appearing to warn Pakistan’s military leadership and pledge support to Afghanistan. The embassy has dismissed the footage as “100 percent fake,” saying the audio was fabricated to spread disinformation.
The original video was recorded on October 23 during a meeting of the Russian Geographical Society’s Board of Trustees in Moscow. According to official transcripts, Putin discussed domestic issues, including education, historical projects and Arctic research, and made no reference to Pakistan or Afghanistan.
The doctored clip includes false captions and an AI-generated voice claiming Russia will assist Afghanistan militarily and respond to any threat to its territorial integrity. Analysts and independent fact-checking groups say the audio is digitally manipulated.
The Russian Embassy reiterated Moscow’s stance of supporting a diplomatic resolution between Pakistan and Afghanistan, calling both countries friendly to Russia and stressing the need for constructive dialogue.
Verdict: False. The video uses unrelated footage and fabricated audio to create a misleading narrative about Russia’s position on Pakistan and Afghanistan.
