Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur has taken strict notice of a horrifying incident in the Madyan area of Swat district on Thursday, where a tourist was brutally killed by a violent mob over allegations of blasphemy and later burnt.
The tragic event sparked outrage and concern across the region, while the CM has instructed the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation.
According to reports, local residents in Madyan accused the Sialkot-based tourist of committing blasphemy on Thursday, leading to a violent mob gathering around him. The situation escalated when the mob attacked the local police station, where the tourist was seeking refuge, and tortured him to death. His body was ultimately set on fire.
Despite efforts by the police to protect him, the victim succumbed to his injuries. The violent encounter also left eight policemen injured as they attempted to maintain order amidst the chaos.
Chief Minister Gandapur promptly took notice of the distressing incident and directed the KP Police inspector general to conduct a thorough investigation. In a telephone call to the IGP, the chief minister emphasized the urgency of the matter and urged immediate measures to bring the situation under control.
Expressing deep regret over the tragic loss of life, CM Gandapur appealed for calm and urged citizens to refrain from taking the law into their own hands. He underscored the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice for all parties involved.
Initial reports indicate that the incident began when local residents accused the tourist of making derogatory remarks, prompting the police to intervene and attempt to secure him at the station. However, the situation quickly deteriorated as word spread through mosque announcements, drawing a large crowd demanding the tourist be handed over.
The mob's actions included pelting stones at the police station, breaking through its defenses, causing extensive damage to the premises and police vehicles and eventually setting the police station on fire. Despite efforts to quell the violence, the situation escalated tragically.
Authorities are now working diligently to restore calm in the area and apprehend those responsible for the violence. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation and calls for justice from various quarters, highlighting the need for concerted efforts to prevent such incidents in the future.
