The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has withdrawn its decision to increase the fares of metro and electric buses in Islamabad by 100% after facing strong public backlash.
Initially, the CDA had announced a hike in one-way fares from Rs 50 to Rs 100 for all metro and electric buses operating on 17 routes across the capital.
The notification also mentioned that the stop-to-stop fare for buses running under CDA management would be fixed at Rs 100. This increase was set to take effect from May 26 and was expected to impact more than 90,000 daily commuters.
However, following widespread public criticism and negative reactions, the CDA took a U-turn and clarified that the fare hike was only a proposal under consideration. A CDA spokesperson denied any increase in the fares of Orange, Blue, Green, and electric buses and emphasized that no final decision has been made at this time.
The metro and electric feeder bus services continue to operate at the existing fare of Rs 50, and authorities said they would keep the public informed regarding any future changes.
