Pakistan has officially become a founding member of the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO), marking a significant step in the country's efforts to strengthen international cooperation in artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.
The development was announced by Ali Mustafa Dar, Adviser to the Chief Minister of Punjab on AI and Special Initiatives, in a post on X.
Earlier on Thursday, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar arrived in China on a two-day official visit to attend the inaugural ceremony of WAICO in Shanghai.
According to the Foreign Office, Dar is visiting China at the invitation of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
During the ceremony, Dar signed the agreement establishing the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization on behalf of Pakistan, making the country one of its founding members.
The deputy prime minister is also scheduled to participate in the High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance on July 17, where he will present Pakistan's perspective on strengthening international cooperation in artificial intelligence.
On the sidelines of the conference, Dar is expected to hold bilateral talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to discuss bilateral relations and issues of mutual interest.
The Foreign Office said the visit reflects Pakistan's commitment to promoting global collaboration in artificial intelligence, digital innovation and emerging technologies while further strengthening its strategic partnership with China.
Dar is also expected to meet leaders and senior officials from participating countries to explore cooperation in AI, innovation and digital transformation.
