Meteorological Department Director General Dr Muhammad Afzal has warned that the country is likely to receive below-normal rainfall, a situation that could affect agriculture, increase seasonal diseases and pose challenges for water-dependent crops.
The Met chief said that despite forecasts of lower-than-normal rainfall, the threat of flooding in certain areas cannot be ruled out. He said rainfall during the upcoming season is expected to remain below normal levels.
He cautioned that reduced precipitation could have an impact on agricultural production and create difficulties for farmers, particularly those cultivating water-intensive crops.
Rice crop may face challenges
The Met chief specifically highlighted concerns regarding rice cultivation. He noted that rice is a crop that requires a significant amount of water, making it particularly vulnerable to lower-than-normal rainfall and potential water shortages.

Dr Afzal also warned that seasonal diseases could increase during the period. He said weather conditions associated with the forecast could contribute to a rise in health-related concerns, requiring preparedness from relevant authorities.
Flood risk still exists
The Met DG stressed that lower rainfall does not mean the country is free from flood threats.
“Less rainfall does not mean there will be no risk of flooding,” he said, emphasizing that localized heavy downpours can still trigger flooding incidents.
He further said that different parts of the country could face the risk of urban flooding. He warned that intense rainfall events in urban centers can overwhelm drainage systems, leading to flooding even during seasons with below-average overall rainfall.
El Niño risk highlighted
Dr Afzal also pointed to the possibility of El Niño conditions affecting weather patterns.
He said there will be a risk of El Niño, a climate phenomenon that can significantly influence rainfall distribution, temperatures and weather conditions across the region.
