After petroleum products, electricity bills have also emerged as a major source of tax collection, with consumers paying more than Rs1,906 billion in taxes over three years.
According to documents obtained by Samaa TV, more than Rs700 billion was collected from electricity consumers in taxes last year alone.
Documents show that electricity distribution companies collected Rs507 billion in taxes from consumers during 2022-23. Tax collection through electricity bills rose to Rs698 billion in 2023-24, while last year’s collection crossed Rs700 billion.
DISCO-wise tax collection revealed
The documents provide a detailed breakdown of tax collections by electricity distribution companies over three years. Islamabad Electric Supply Company collected Rs232 billion from consumers during the period.
Lahore Electric Supply Company collected more than Rs532 billion, making it one of the highest contributors in tax collection through electricity bills.
Punjab DISCOs collect major share
Gujranwala Electric Power Company collected Rs240 billion in taxes from electricity consumers. Faisalabad Electric Supply Company collected Rs307 billion, while Multan Electric Power Company’s tax collection stood at Rs323 billion over three years.
Peshawar Electric Supply Company collected Rs151 billion in taxes during the three-year period. Hazara Electric Supply Company collected Rs57.58 billion, while Quetta Electric Supply Company collected Rs24.28 billion from consumers.
Tribal areas and Sukkur collections
Tribal Areas Electric Supply Company collected Rs1.55 billion in taxes through electricity bills. Sukkur Electric Power Company collected Rs34.46 billion from consumers over three years.
The figures show that electricity bills have become a significant source of government revenue, similar to petroleum products. With taxes forming a major part of utility bills, consumers continue to face rising financial pressure amid high energy costs.
