The United Arab Emirates has begun recalling infant formula of a well-known brand in view of global food safety concerns.
According to Arab media, the recall order was issued late Wednesday night in a statement by the Emirates Drug Establishment (EDE), which clarified that the move is voluntary and precautionary in nature.
According to the EDE, the products being recalled include five infant formula products for newborns from the internationally renowned brand.
It is noteworthy that trace amounts of a bacterium called Bacillus cereus were found in one of the raw materials used in the formula.
This bacterium can, in certain cases, produce a toxin known as cereulide, which may pose a risk to infants’ health.
It is also worth noting that the company had earlier recalled certain batches of its products in Europe. Subsequently, similar recalls were carried out in Africa, Asia, and the United States.
At least 37 countries, including Australia, Brazil, China, Mexico, and South Africa, have issued health warnings due to possible contamination.
In the Gulf region as well, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Qatar have announced bans on the sale of this brand’s infant formula.
Experts advise that if infants experience severe or persistent vomiting, diarrhea, or unusual lethargy after consuming formula milk, they should be taken to the hospital immediately.
However, if no symptoms appear within 30 minutes to 6 hours, there is no need to panic, though a pediatrician should be consulted in case of any emergency.
It is important to note that so far, no illness or adverse effects linked to this brand’s infant formula have been confirmed in the UAE.
