The first recorded case of rabies transmission from a cow to a human has been reported in Karachi.
The patient, an 18-year-old farmer from Landhi, was bitten on the hand and thumb by a cow while grazing livestock last year. The cow, later confirmed to have been infected with rabies, died shortly after the incident.
Thanks to prompt medical intervention at Indus Hospital, the farmer’s life was saved. According to recent health data, more than 21,000 dog bite cases have been reported in Karachi this year alone. Sixteen fatalities have occurred due to a lack of timely vaccination.
Health experts were urging immediate and widespread rabies vaccination campaigns in rural areas. They stress the importance of animal monitoring and farmer education to prevent further cases.
Cattle, while a vital source of livelihood, may also pose serious risks to human health if not properly managed.
