An earthquake shook Chapursan in Hunza early Thursday morning, causing a landslide near Ramenji and damaging several homes.
No loss of life has been reported so far. Chapursan Valley in Gilgit-Baltistan has faced a series of dangerous earthquakes for several months, forcing local residents to leave the area for safety.
The valley, in Hunza district and adjoining the Pakistan-Afghanistan border’s Wakhan Corridor, came under a strong earthquake on 19 January. Residents fled their homes to save their lives, while several houses collapsed. Heavy landsliding also blocked the only unpaved road leading to the valley.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department and the Geological Survey of Pakistan (GSP) linked the continuing earthquakes in the area to a fault line and confirmed that tremors could be felt across Gilgit-Baltistan. The earthquakes recorded magnitudes ranging from 4.5 to 5.4.
Underground glacier movements along the fault line have also been cited as a possible cause of the earthquakes. Residents of the affected area continue to live in other parts of the region after leaving the valley because of the continuing seismic activity.
