At least 30 Yemeni government troops were killed and around 50 others wounded in Houthi attacks on military camps in the provinces of Marib and Hadramout on Thursday, according to government officials.
Officials said the assaults targeted camps belonging to forces loyal to Yemen's internationally recognised government, adding that the death toll could rise as several of the wounded remain in critical condition.
The attacks mark one of the deadliest escalations since a de facto truce brokered in April 2022 largely halted major fighting between the Iran-backed Houthi movement and the Saudi-led coalition supporting the Yemeni government.
Yemen's military confirmed that Houthi attacks on its camps resulted in casualties among government forces but did not provide an official death toll.
The Houthis had not immediately claimed responsibility for the assaults but said a statement on a "major" military operation would be released later.
Conflict enters new phase
Yemen has remained engulfed in conflict since 2014, when Houthi forces seized the capital, Sanaa, forcing the internationally recognised government to relocate abroad.
A Saudi-led military coalition intervened in 2015 in support of the government, but years of fighting have resulted in a prolonged stalemate despite the relative calm brought by the 2022 truce.
The latest attacks raise concerns over renewed large-scale hostilities and the stability of the fragile ceasefire.
